BUFFALO CITY BLOWS MILLIONS ON ‘GHOST EVENTS’

The DA has accused the municipality of spending close to R2.1million on events that never happened.

CAPE TOWN - The Buffalo City Municipality has mismanaged more than R1 billion since 2011.

The Eastern Cape metro is unable to account for more than R1.2 billion and the municipality has launched an investigation.

Buffalo City Municipality spokesperson Sibusiso Cindi says, “Since 2011, up until now, there’s about R1.2 billion that needs to be investigated.”

Of the R1.2 billion, R132 million was allegedly mismanaged in the current financial year.

Last year, the Buffalo City Municipality was the worst performing metro in the country with irregular expenditure exceeding the billion rand mark.

CAPE TOWN - Eastern Cape police are investigating the death of a Buffalo City Municipality worker.
The man was killed, allegedly by a superior, last Friday during a protest.
The deceased was part of a group of about 100 employees who were protesting outside the municipality's premises.

It's alleged a manager then rammed his bakkie into a gate and knocked down some of the demonstrators.

The police's Mluleki Mbi says, “After following up we discovered one employee was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital. He later died in hospital. We’re investigating a case of murder.”

JOHANNESBURG - The Buffalo City Municipality in the Eastern Cape has been accused of paying more than R2 million for “ghost” events that have never taken place.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says one these events include an ‘egg and spoon’ race, which cost R250,000.
The DA’s Kevin Mileham says there are a number of sports tournaments, funded by the Buffalo City Municipality, which have allegedly never taken place.
“These include an alleged egg and spoon race, tug of war, bucket race for which the municipality sponsored R250,000.”
Mileham says the ghost events amount to R2.1million.
Buffalo City’s head of events, Phumla Nazo, has referred media queries to the mayor’s office.
Mayoral spokesperson Thandy Matebese has been unavailable for comment.

CAPE TOWN - More than R700 million has been mismanaged by the Buffalo City Municipality in the Eastern Cape, according to the latest auditor-general report.The Buffalo City metro has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent months with two consecutive mayors who have been implicated in financial irregularities.

The Buffalo City Municipality has refused to comment on an audit that shows millions of Rands have been mismanaged by metro officials.The auditor-general's report found R479 million in irregular expenditure in the 2014/15 financial year.Another R245 million has been written off as unauthorised expenditure.Two former mayors have been implicated in gross financial mismanagement that is still being investigated.Zukisa Faku and Zukiswa Ncitha have in the meantime been redeployed to Parliament.
